Distilled Models Preserve Tool-Use Behavior

Stage changed

An independent builder reduced a 30B model to 14B through distillation and reports preserving 57 of 60 held-out closed-loop tool tasks, using a separate policy teacher for decisions. This adds implementation evidence to the earlier research on transferring agent behavior into smaller models. The result is still self-reported and needs reproducible weights, evaluation artifacts and independent testing.

Small Models Inherit Agent Memory

First detected

A training-free framework transfers hierarchical memory from a large teacher agent to a smaller agent that cannot generate enough successful trajectories on its own. The mechanism could make capable local and edge agents cheaper without reproducing the full training process. It is not yet a market signal because evidence is limited to one paper; implementation in an open runtime, repeatable cost-quality gains or adoption by a small-model platform would confirm it.

Liked Muse, so I cut the 30B model in half by width, distilled it back, and it does 57 of 60 tool tasks its parent does 60 of

I've liked how Muse-Glimmer worked, so I wanted to see if I could produce a smaller "kid" out of it. Ornith's sharp decisions on when to think and which tool to call were the other thing I liked, so Ornith-1.0-9B got to be the policy teacher while the parent w...

Agent Memory Distillation: Empowering Small LLM Agents with Hierarchical Teacher Memory

Memory systems have shown promise for improving agent performance, but their potential remains largely unexplored for small language models, which struggle to generate sufficient successful trajectories on their own. We propose Agent Memory Distillation (AMD),...
